Prayer. O God of ages past and of every present moment, as rich and varied as our language is, it fails to adequately express our gratitude for the richness of life which we are privileged to experience. As we offer our deeply felt "thank you," we also pray for help in substantiating what we say by the quality of life we live. Let our gratitude be clearly seen in the pursuit of our vocations, in the integrity of actions, in our devotion to truth, and fairness in our dealings with others, and in or loyal stewardship of the resources which you have entrusted to us.
Thank you, God, for the nourishing food and nurturing fellowship we enjoy from week to week. We offer our prayer with humility and praise. Amen.

Rotary Foundation Thought. This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Every Rotarian, Every Year.
Every minute of every day someone’s life is being improved by our Rotary Foundation. Wells are being dug in India, blind children are using Braille typewriters in Brazil, toilets
are part of improved sanitation in Sri Lanka, and dental treatment is available to the needy in Nicaragua. In a world where the divide between the haves and have-nots is
growing, we as Rotarians must do our part and “do good in the world.”
Every Rotarian, every project, and every contribution makes a difference every year.
Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House, a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on the 1st Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Eastover Drive and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM and then travel together to Billy Brumfield. Between the Lions. Please remember to sign up for Between the Lions. During the school year, we read weekly to pre-Kindergarteners at William Walton Elementary School on Bailey Ave. It is a wonderful experience! This year we will be reading on Tuesdays and Fridays at 09:00.

Dr. Kevin Freeman spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson about the Opioid Crisis and Counter-measures that are being developed to combat it at the club’s January 15, 2019, meeting. Dr. Freeman is a native of the Jackson area. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Mississippi and his doctorate in psychology at the American University in Washington, DC. He is currently a Behavioral Pharmacologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Dr. Freeman discussed the history of the opioids in the U.S. including the introduction of opioids as “safe, effective,non-addictive” pain medicines. Counter-measures he discussed are pharmaceutical combinations that reduce the impact of heroin and fentanyl on the human brain. These combinations have been thoroughly investigated on mammals The next step is clinical trials on humans. We thank Dr. Freeman for his work on behalf of Mississippians and his work at the Medical Center.
Ed Thurmond, Rotary District 6820 Governor Nominee for 2020-2021 presented the Rotary Club of North Jackson with a Certificate from The Rotary Foundation highlighting the club’s contributions to the project to eliminate polio. Since 1985, when annually there were 350,000 cases of polio globally, a total of $1.65 billion has been spent on eliminating polio in a project started by and headed by Rotary International. This project has reduced the number of annual cases by 99.99%. In 2017, there were 22 cases of polio in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria.

Mississippi Today Sports Columnist Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson
Rick Cleveland, Sports Columnist with “Mississippi Today” spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackso at the club’s January 8, 2019 meeting. Mr. Cleveland discussed his career, which started with the "Hattiesburg American" in 1979 at age 13, including changes in the journalism profession and some highlights of his career, which includes induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and stints as a Sports Reporter and Sports Editor of the Jackson “Clarion-Ledger”. He said that print journalism has severely declined since he began his career and that he sees the future in community newspapers such as Jackson’s “Northside Sun” and online newspapers. According to Mr. Cleveland, his staff at the “Clarion-Ledger” when he was Sports Editor consisted of 5 sports reporters. Today there is one sports reporter reflecting the change in print journalism.
Mr. Cleveland also relayed personal stories from his career including an interview with Alabama Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant when he was a young reporter. He is shown in the following photos during his presentation and following it (left) with club Vice President Greg Campbell (center) and Rotarian Mark Kennedy (right) who introduced him. We thank Mr. Cleveland for his commitment to Mississippi sports, to our state, and for his presentation to our club.
Pam Smith, 2018-2019 Governor of Rotary District 6820 spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at the club’s December 18 meeting. The primary subject of her speech was Rotary and its 2018-19 “Be the Inspiration” theme developed by 2018-19 Rotary International President Barry Rassin of The Bahamas. She also said that if you include the global Rotaract and Interact members, Rotary is the world’s largest service organization and that its 1985 initiative to end polio has been 99.99% successful.
Gov. Smith also talked about the importance of Rotarians buying the Rotary automobile license. She reiterated that the District will pay the first year’s $31.00 fee for the new tags provided that the order is received by Dec. 31, 2018. She is shown below during her presentation. She noted that Rotary’s “End Polio Now” initiative has reduced polio cases by 99.9% since the initiative was started in 1985 when there were 350,000 worldwide polio cases. There have been 14 cases in 2018 as of World Polio Day, October 24, 2018
