The reasons for selecting their teacher and their educational plans

Each year, the Rotary Club of North Jackson recognizes the Star Students from the North Jackson high schools. This recognition gives the students and their teachers an opportunity to meet our club members and the students an opportunity to discuss their educational plans, to introduce their Star Teachers and explain why they selected that teacher. Star students are high achievers, normally with a 4.0 GPA or higher and an ACT composite score of 35 -36. The Mississippi Economic Council defines a STAR Honor Student as follows:

To be eligible for the STAR Student honor, a student may be a regularly enrolled senior or an approved dually enrolled student in an accredited public or private high school and or an accredited post-secondary institution. The student must be completing his or her last year of work and must be eligible to receive a diploma in the current school year. The student must have an overall ACT composite score of at least 25 and an overall average of 93 or above in selected subjects in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and first-semester twelfth grades.

Selection of the STAR Student: The steps for designating the STAR Student are:
1) Determine which senior has the highest score on the ACT. The ACT must have been taken before December 31st, the year prior to the Education Celebration. *Only permanent-record-label ACT scores on file in the high school office are to be considered. 

2) There are several additional steps in selecting a STAR Student in the event of a tie on the first selection criterion.
