Lee Thigpen, Executive Director of Mission First, Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Lee Thigpen, Executive Director of Mission First, spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at it November 11 meeting. Mission First is an approximately 15 year old outreach of the First Baptist Church of Jackson. Mr. Thigpen is also Director of Community Missions for First Baptist Church.  MIssion First focuses its efforts on the West Park Area of Jackson. West Park is bounded on the north by Capitol Street and the south by Robinson St. It extends from the intersection of Capitol & Robinson to Ellis Avenue on the West. In the year before Mission First was formed, there were 7 murders in the area. Since its formation, there has been one murder in 12 years. Mission First offers medical, dental and legal aid services to low income residents. In addition it offers after school and vacation activities for students. It has also renovated numerous houses in the area helping to restore it to a viable community. Lee is shown below during his presentation.
