Salvation Army Captain Ken Chapman spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its January 6, 2015 meeting. He discussed the Salvation Army, its 150 year history, and it activities in Jackson. According to Captain Chapman, the Salvation Army has 1.5 million members worldwide. It global headquarters are in London, England and its U. S. headquarters are just outside  Washington D.C. In addition to its familiar red kettles, the Salvation Army has homeless shelters, a thrift store and conducts an annual  Angel Tree campaign. This year, the Angel Tree helped over 4000 children in the Jackson area. Per Captain Chapman, the goal of the Salvation Army is to provide a hand up, not a hand out to its clients. In recent years, the no. of Angel Tree recipients has been reduced from over 8000 due to the needy clients moving into a better economic position. IN partnership with BankPlus, the Jackson Salvation Army has helped 208 families that previously had no bank accounts start savings accounts that now total $1.2 million in value.
